To promote more active participation of students in the classroom, the College Department of this University held a seminar-workshop on Student-Centered Teaching Strategies on July 25, 2008.

The seminar-workshop aimed to enhance the competence of the college faculty in the use of teaching strategies which give students executive control of their own learning.

The plenary sessions of the seminar-workshop were held in the Nursing Skills Laboratory of the St. Joseph Freinademetz Building. The workshops, in the form of concurrent sessions, were held in designated venues of the HNU-Dampas Campus.

In the morning, Dr. Merlea Cabalquinto, a professor of Cebu Normal University and a national trainor in English language education, delivered a three-hour talk on strategies that promote student-centered learning. Dr. Cabalquinto explained how to apply the approaches and strategies such as Concept Attainment Approach, Concept Development Approach, Synetics, 5As and others. Her enlightening talk was interspersed with relevant pieces of humor which kept the close to three hundred faculty and employees fully awake.

In the afternoon, Dr. Guadalupe Saturinas talked on making lesson outline. Her talk gave the faculty adequate knowledge on lesson preparation through lesson outline writing. The workshop on the application of student-centered teaching strategies and lesson outline making followed. The participants formed seven clusters with each cluster handled by facilitators who were members of the College In-Service Training Committee composed of the Chair – Dr. Roque Bongcac; Co-Chair – Dr. Guadalupe Saturinas; and the members – Dr. Marilou Uy. Dr. Abraham Encabo, Dr. Doris Patindol, Ms. Maricel Zaldivar, and Mr. Dennis Jayectin.

Mrs. Rosalina Sarabosing and Mrs. Rosalie Bojos generously helped in the facilitation, in lieu of Dr. Patindol an In-House Committee member who was in Jakarta, Indonesia for another seminar.

The Vice President for Academic Affairs, Fr. Romeo P. Bancale, SVD, in his welcome address, underscored the importance of the seminar-workshop in the improvement of the quality of instruction of the university.
