THREE QUESTIONS FOR HNU’s NEW VP FOR ADMIN, FR. ANDRES GUBAN, SVD

Holy Name University has a new Vice President for Administration starting last June 2008 in the person of Fr. Andres Guban, SVD, called by his friends and associates as Fr. Andy. He will serve HNU for three years – the duration of a one term of office as an executive.

Fr. Andy is not new to HNU nor HNU is new to him. For several years, he has served as Director of the Campus Ministry Office and has functioned as head in some committee works especially those that involve his services as CM director.

Now, a new dimension of leadership is laden onto his shoulders as the man to man all the personnel of HNU, especially the non-academic personnel and those who are assigned in the physical plant, maintenance, carpentry, and the like.

Last June 03, 2008, Fr. Andy was interviewed by this writer – who happened to be his classmate in the Novitiate in the Divine Word Seminary in Tagaytay City in the years 1982 until 1984.

Dr. Babor (DB): How did you feel when you were notified of your new position?

Fr. Andy (FA): I was hesitant to accept, but because of the encouragement of Fr. Heinz Kulueke, SVD (the Provincial Superior of the SVD Southern Province) and Fr. Eduardo “Jingjong” Rocha, SVD (the Vice Provincial Superior of the same province) I took the appointment. DB: As the new Vice President for Administration, what priorities would you like to pursue?

FA: There are four major areas that to me are indispensable in an excellent school like HNU. Hence, I want to give focus to them: (1) Policy. I want to strengthen our policies. To me, some of our policies here in HNU must be reviewed, improved, and strengthened so that they will be made binding and, therefore, ought to be followed by all who are affected by them. These policies pertain to those that govern the students and employees. Consequently, after these policies are strengthened I wish that they will become meaningful and healthy binding force of a peaceful partnership between HNU and all the employees and HNU with the students; (2) Performance and Productivity. Currently, our students perform well during board exams, but we need not only maintain this but augment further. I envision that our employees will improve in their performance. Starting this school year, I will implement a Professional Development Program to our employees. This we can do by exposing them to some more trainings especially through workshops and seminars. I will also revitalize our athletic activities since physical development is anchored on a “sound mind, sound body” principle; (3) Personnel Relationship. I will put much emphasis on the healthy relationship among ourselves through the Catholicity of our university. I will put up a Grievance Committee to help resolve disputes that may arise from the rank-and-file employees with their colleagues and also with their superiors or heads. I will also invite some experts to help our employees come to terms with a healthy relationship among themselves; and (4) Preservation and Acquisition of Resources. The skills of our employees here must be preserved and developed. It is good also for us to keep our financial standing and capability intact. Our energy consumption must also be given concern especially that HNU is expanding its parameters. I also need to strengthen the Engineering Laboratory, among others.

DB: What would you like the employees to be?

FA: I want them to exercise the spirit of professionalism, especially in their respective work assignments and also in their dealings with each other. Finally, I want them to be productive, happy, and committed so that they eagerly become our partners in the mission.
