The Grade School Department had their annual Sinulog festivities last January 18-19, 2008. The two-day event kicked off with a special Eucharistic celebration in honor of Señor Santo Niño, the department's beloved patron saint, at the Janssen Heights Gym. It was celebrated by the school President, Fr. Ernesto Lagura, SVD and co-officiated by the VP for Administration, Fr. Felino Javines, SVD, the VP for Finance, Fr. Emmanuel Sarabia, SVD and the GS Chaplain, Fr. Milo Mapaye, SVD. The opening of booths followed and the pupils, with their parents, had fun visiting each of them. In the afternoon, an Academic-Literary-Musical Program was held at the gym wherein the pupils’ talents and abilities were showcased. Facilitated by Mrs. Michele Rellita, children from the Kindergarten to Grade 6 gave their unique presentations. The crowd-drawer (as students from the other departments huddled in to witness) was the Spelling Bee participated by the Grade 4, 5, and 6 pupils. The audience and spectators were amazed by the contestants' ability to spell even the most difficult words.
The second day commenced with a solemn procession around the HNU grounds. Led by the GS Drum and Lyre Corps, pupils from Grades 1 to 6, donned in their colorful costumes, walked prayerfully with their teachers. Meanwhile, the Kinder 1 and 2 pupils waited patiently in the gym. The Sinulog, or a fusion of traditional, religious and ethnic dances followed. This year, the department featured different Philippine festivals, namely: the Pahiyas Festival (Kinder 1), The Kadayawan Festival (Kinder 2), The Bangus Festival (Grade 1), The Masskara Festival (Grade 2), The Sinulog Festival (Grade 4), The Sandugo Festival (Grade 5), and The Dinagyang Festival (Grade 6). The Grade School bannered the theme: "Santo Niño, Pasidunggan ta Pinaagi Niining mga Pyesta." The affair culminated with an agape or love feast at the GS AV Hall.
