The College of Computer Science held its First Academic Contests last January 24, 2009. The contests were held at the CS main laboratories conducted and judged by the CS Faculty members led by the dean, Mrs. Amie Rosarie C. Caballo.
The event is intended to recognize students with exemplary performance on the areas of programming, web designing and graphics designing. The said event is going to be an annual activity of the college aimed to encourage students to be more diligent with their studies. All the contestants were identified the recommendation made by the CS instructors. The criteria for selection were on their class performance and grades of the subjects that support the area they were competing for.
The programming contests used C language for both the Junior and Senior categories. An elimination round wherein contestants were made to create programs for some moderately challenging problems was conducted. As a result of the final round, Mr. Ervin Brian Sumalinog won the Junior Programmer of the Year title. He was awarded with a 4 GB USB Flash Memory, plaque of recognition and cash. The junior category was competed by some sophomores only. The freshmen were not included yet in the said category for they still lack units in programming subject to qualify them for the competition. Jake Arvin Fudolig bagged the Senior Programmer of the Year award. This category was competed by selected junior and senior students. Mr. Fudolig won for himself a plaque of recognition and cash.
Ms. Irish Tandog got the Junior Web Designer of the Year award after creating a website for a store that sells some electronic gadgets online. She won a 2 GB USB Flash Memory, plaque of recognition and cash while Mr. Geovanni Auditor emerged victorious as the Senior Web Designer of the Year. He attempted to develop a tracer program for the university's alumni. A plaque of recognition and cash was awarded to him. Due to time constraints, the alumni tracer program is not fully developed still but some modules are already working.
The Junior Graphics of the Year title holder for this year is Ms. Jhoan Horca. She was awarded with a 4 GB USB Flash Memory, plaque of recognition and cash. The tightly competed Senior Graphics Designer of the Year title landed to Mr. Raphael Pacursa who received a plaque of recognition and cash. The graphics designers created remarkable posters which were based on the theme: "ICT at Work: Bridging Filipinos towards Excellence" using MS Paint for the junior category and Adobe Photoshop for the senior category.
The prizes were solicited from former students of the said college, its faculty members and some esteemed sponsors.
