For the fifth consecutive year, the College of Engineering of Holy Name University proudly presented the HNU Engineering Fair and Project Exhibit to the public last March 5 – 7, 2009 at The Atrium of BQ Mall, which showcased the projects made by fourth year and graduating engineering students. This year's theme was “Advancing Technology in Challenging Times.”

Among the highlights of the three-day event were: the first public defense of project studies, the search for the Best Student Research, and two quiz bowls sponsored by IECEP-Bohol, and the College of Engineering Local Government Unit (LGU).

The event was opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony last March 5, 2009 at 10 o’clock in the morning. HNU Father President, Fr. Francisco Estepa, SVD, HNU President, together with SMART Communications representative, Ms. Marilyn Indac and BQ Mall Manager, Mr. Sulphio Bernasor, graced the said affair. Other special guests were Fr. Romeo Bancale, SVD, HNU VP for Academic Affairs and Fr. Andy Guban, SVD, HNU VP for Administration.

The public defense of the electronics engineering project studies was held on the afternoon of March 5, 2009. There were seven project entries from the Electronics Engineering Department namely, “A Community-Based Fire Management System,” “Flood Prone Alert,” Noise Management Device,” “Access Control Thru Face Recognition,” “Tide Monitoring System,” “Brownout Alert,” and “Landslide Early Warning System.” Among the panel of judges were Engr. Luz Nuera, Engr. Jan Ray Rulida, both faculty members of HNU’s College of Engineering, and Ms. Marjorie Hornido, a representative from SMART. Engr. Justin Villocido served as the moderator of the public defense.

In the morning of the following day, March 6 (Thursday), the public defense of the computer engineering project studies was conducted. The three project entries for the Computer Engineering Department were “Lost In Time,” “Message Patrol,” and “School Entry Login and Database System.” Among the panel of judges were Engr. Reynaldo Agunod and Engr. Harvey Halasan, who are both IT personnel of Holy Name University, and Engr. Paul Bentulan who is connected with the Commission on Elections.

One project study from the fourth year Computer Engineering also presented their project called “Project Shiloh” for public defense to qualify for the Best Student Research competition. The different project studies from the electronics engineering, computer engineering, and the project study of the civil engineering automatically qualified to the said competition.

Two groups from the 3rd year civil engineering students under the class, Theory of Structures of Dr. Marilou Uy, competed in the Bridge Building Competition. The bridge models were made out of bamboos.

On the other hand, the Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines - Bohol Chapter (IECEP-Bohol) sponsored “The Fourth IECEP Inter-School Quiz Bowl” on the afternoon of the same day. The contest was participated in by University of Bohol and Holy Name University. The questions for the said quiz bowl were chartered directly from the IECEP regional chapter in Cebu City represented by Engr. Leopoldo Din from Cebu Institute of Technology and Engr. Sheila Añora from University of San Jose Recoletos. Engr. Jerome Auza of auza.net, served as the quiz master of the said competition.

The HNU Team B composed of Michael Jala, Leah Decasa and Margarette Nitollama won the first place. They received a cash prize of P900.00 with trophy and medals; 2nd prize went to the HNU Team A whose contingents received P600.00 with a trophy and medals; 3rd prize went to UB Team A with a cash prize of P300 plus trophy and medals. The consolation prizes at P150.00 were given to the non-winners.

The event was co-presented by Thrizhel Distributors and Marketing (TDM), the exclusive distributor of Bounty Fresh Chicken, and Beauche International Products.

The major sponsors of the IECEP Quiz Bowl were auza.net and Excel First Review Center. The minor sponsors were LFH Surveying Services located in Booy District, Tagbilaran City, X-squared Online, Gerisonic Electronics and Communications, and PERC-DC Review Center.

Meanwhile, the COE Local Government Unit (LGU) also hosted an “Inter-departmental Engineering Science Quiz Bowl” on the last day of the event, March 7, Saturday. It was participated in by the Departments of Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Electronics Engineering. Mr. Ace Uy and Engr. Marben Belarmino served as quiz consultants while Engr. Luz Nuera was the quiz master.

The contestants from the Civil Engineering were composed of Khader Fashho, Nehru Magadan, and Agelo Molina while Rose May Aparicio and Marjorie Delima composed the Computer Engineering.

The ECE department grabbed the top three places. Leah Decasa emerged as the first place, Michael Jala as 2nd place and lastly, Wilmer Milloria earned the third place. The prizes were sponsored by the HNU Central Student Government, Bohol Quality Cineleisure, and 102.3 KISS FM.

The 5th Engineering Fair and Project Exhibit was concluded with a Closing and Awarding Ceremonies on the afternoon of March 7, Saturday. Winners of the Best Student Researches were declared. The CE project study, “A Proposed Development Of An Old Spanish Theme Eco-Cultural Destination in Punta Cruz Watch in Maribojoc, Bohol,” “Brownout Alert,” and “Project Shiloh” were adjudged as the Best Student Research in the civil engineering, electronics engineering, and computer engineering categories, respectively.

Other winners were the design project from the fifth year computer engineering, “Message Patrol” as first prize winner of the computer engineering category; the miniature carpentry project, “Narrow Lot Charmer,” also won first prize of the carpentry project category and finally, the Howe Truss Bridge Model won over the K Truss Bridge Model in the Bridge Building competition. Certificates of Participation and recognition were awarded to the winners and non-winners, respectively. The first prize winners also received cash prizes.

The 5th Engineering Fair and Project Exhibit is an annual event of the College of Engineering of Holy Name University presented by BQ Mall and SMART Communications. The said event was also supported by its generous sponsors, AAC Tech, BINGO Bohol, Boysen Paints, 1st Flower Avenue, Save n’ Earn, and Yayo Builders.
