The Read-To-Be-Smart Summer Storytelling and Feeding Program wrapped up with a culmination at the Catarman Barangay Hall, Dauis last May 29, 2010. The program was participated in by Grade 1 pupils of Catarman Elementary School together with their parents and the Smart Volunteers with the Community Extension Development (CEDev) staff. The Holy Name University president, Fr. Francisco T. Estepa, SVD, the former dean of the College of Education, Dr. Guadalupe Saturinas, and a representative from Smart Communications, Inc., Ms. Lourdes Gucotano, graced the event.

The program was formed from the partnership of Smart Communications, Inc. and Holy Name University. It was atwo-month activity organized by the CEDev Office headed by Engr. Noel Uy and the College of Education. For eight Saturdays, eleven student volunteers from the College of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences shared stories to the Grade 1 kids of Catarman Elementary School.

The half-day activity consisted of the storytelling, short examination, an art time, and snacks at the end. The program aimed to instill the minds of the young kids the importance of reading, to inspire them to study well, and to teach them of values.

A total of 70 pupils from the 3 sections of the grade 1 from Catarman Elementary School attended the summer program.

SMART Communications also provided snacks for the children and the volunteers every Saturday from April 10 - May 29, 2010. In the culmination day, medals were given to outstanding pupils and others who showed strong participation in the program. SMART Communications also donated bags with educational materials and free t-shirts to all the Grade 1 pupils.

During the program, a representative from Catarman Elementary School handed over a plaque of appreciation to Holy name University and SMART Communications, Inc. as a gesture of gratitude for the services they have delivered to their school.

Holy Name University through the President, Fr. Estepa, also handed over to SMART Communications a plaque of appreciation.

This achool year, 2010, SMART and HNU-CEDev with the College of Education will be launching the COMMUNITY MENTORING PROGRAM for the whole school year.

The said program will be implemented to the slow learners from all the Grade Levels in Catarman Elementary School. Inspired by the African proverb "it takes a village to raise a child" SMART and HNU envision to help in improveing the academic performance as well as the welfare of the pupils in Catarman Elementary School.
