Michael Cañares, an assistant professor for Accountancy at Holy name University, was selected as a principal candidate to the Fulbright Student Award to undertake doctoral studies in the United States in 2010.Dr. Esmeralda Cunanan of the Philippines-American Education, the body that screens the Fulbright scholarship applicants here in the Philippines, informed HNU administrators and Mr. Cañares of his selection in September this year.
Mr. Cañares is a fulltime teacher at the College of Business and Accountancy. In 2005, he was selected by the Ford Foundation International Fellowships program as one of its fellows to undertake graduates studies in the United Kingdom. He graduated his MSc in Development Studies at the prestigious London School of Economics in 2007. Becuase of this academic achievement at LSE, Mr. Cañares was hired as a young consultant at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for five months right after graduation.
Mr. Cañares has represented the Philippines in international conferences and training in Switzerland, Greece, Belgium, Thialand, Ireland, India, and in the UK. Very recently, he presented a paper in the United Kingdom Development Studies Association conference entitled "It's Just a Buzzword from Above: Climate Change Challenge and Local Government Indifference in the Philippines." This research was featured by a UK-based website PANOS; Illuminating Voices.
Mr.Cañares is currently undergoing preparations for his doctoral studies. He will be taking the required examinations in November this year.
