The HNU- water testing laboratory is a component of the HNU - Water Assessment Testing, Education, Research Support Services (HNU-WATERSS) Project, funded by the Philippines- Australia Community Assistance Program (PACAP) was granted DOH accreditation to conduct microbiological analysis on April 21, 2009. The accreditation allowed the laboratory to undertake bacteriological and physical analysis on commercial basis. Aside from commercial establishments and water service providers, the clients of the water testing laboratory include ordinary households which wanted to be assured that the water they are drinking is safe. The HNU administration approved the scheme of salary deduction for employees who wanted to avail of the services of the water testing laboratory.
Additional equipment were purchased after the release of another trance from PACAP. These equipment allow the laboratory to conduct chemical analysis. With this capability, HNU submitted a Letter of Intent to the Department of Health for the accreditation to conduct chemical analysis. On November 13, 2009, Mr. Roldan Cubillo, Licensing Officer III and Engr. Vivencio B. Ediza, Jr., Engineer III of DOH- Region 7 conducted an inspection of the water testing laboratory. They interviewed the laboratory personnel, reviewed the laboratory manuals and other relevant documents and inspected the set-up of the laboratory. The inspection has proven that the laboratory has complied with the DOH requirements hence, the granting of accreditation.
At present, the HNU water testing laboratory is capable of conducting the following tests: Microbiological tests: total coliform, fecal coliform, E.coli and heterotrophic plate count (HPC); Physical tests: pH, color, turbidity and total dissolved solids (TDS); Chemical tests: Nitrite, phosphate, residual chlorine and hardness. The laboratory personnel are preparing the laboratory for the conduct of the following additional chemical tests: lead, nitrate, iron, manganese, chloride and sulfate.
