CCS Host ICT Skills Enhancement Training for Teacher Education


Dr. Dave E. Marcial, dean of the College of Computer Studies of Silliman University is leading a research entitled "ICT in Teacher Education in Region 7". The said project is being funded by the Commission on Higher Education through the Philippine Higher Education Research Network (PHERNet). It is facilitated by Silliman University through the Research and Development Center. The research generally aimed towards innovative teaching and learning in the teacher education. It highlights four (4) phases: benchmarking, training, technology development, and evaluation.

A survey that assessed the ICT competency in teacher education in Region 7 has been conducted last April 2013. In Bohol, some fulltime faculty members teaching any professional courses in teacher education program in 20 different colleges and universities in the province took part in the said survey. The results from the assessment were the basis for designing need-based training modules on ICT Skills Enhancement training which was held at the Computer Laboratory 102C, Scanlon Building of the College of Computer Studies, Holy Name University, last May 28 - June 1, 2013.

HNU President Fr. Francisco T. Estepa, SVD stated the welcome message during the opening ceremonies last May 28 which was hosted by Ms. Mitzi S. Fortich, a faculty member of Holy Name University and the Bohol Area Coordinator of PHERNet Project 6. Dr. Dave E. Marcial delivered the statement of purpose and the training overview.

The first three days of the training sessions were handled by Mr. Jay B. Paig, a faculty member of the College of Computer Studies of Holy Name University. Day 1 topic was on Desktop and Folder Management and Basic Hardware Operations in the Classroom. Day 2 was spent on Word Processing using MS Word 2010 and Day 3 on Spreadsheet Application using MS Excel 2010. Mrs. Edgelyn T. Nasayao, also a faculty member of the university took over Day 4 on Presentation using PowerPoint 2010. The Internet with emphasis on various communication and collaboration technologies and online learning management through The Silliman Online University Learning System were handled by Dr. Marcial.

The 5-day Skills Enhancement training ended successfully last June 1, 2013. Some participants who excelled in the activities were given awards. Mrs. Ma. Lourelia Amolato (BWS) was awarded as the Most Cooperative during the Basic Troubleshooting in the Classroom Activity. Best in Word Processing Exercise was Mr. Nemesio Calacat (BCI). Mr. Ted Bryan Ladaran (HNU) bagged the Most Cooperative during the Online Learning Management Activity and the Endeavor Awardees are Mrs. Josefina Stanford (BCI) and Mrs. Liliosa Baluma (BWS). All of them won for themselves a 4Gb USB flash drive. A raffle draw was also done giving USB flash drives to two lucky participants.

Ms. Amie Rosarie C. Caballo, dean of the College of Computer Studies of Holy Name University delivered the closing remarks. She then assisted Dr. Marcial in the awarding of Certificates of Completion to the participants for each day of the training and Certificate of Appearance especially for the government-owned institutions.

The next phase of the project is for the project team to design a portable learning management system and a mobile app for free for teachers handing Teacher Education in Region 7.
