Smart Communications, Inc. conducted a two-day "3G Systems Training" last October 20-21, 2011 in the Engineering Lecture Room at Bates Building of Holy Name University's Janssen Campus. Both engineering faculty members and students participated in the seminar from the Electronics and Communications and Computer Engineering Departments. The training is part of the on-going trainings that Smart conducts for the College of Engineering under the Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP).

The term 3G stands for "third generation systems" which refers to a family of standards for mobile telecommunications technologies. The training covered the following topics: (1) Introduction to 3G Networks; (2) 3G Network Architecture; (3) Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) Radio Path and Transmission; (4) UMTS Traffic Management; (5) Introduction to UMTS Signaling and Interfaces; and (6) UMTS Services and Applications.

The training was handled by Engr. Leopoldo C. Mojal, VI, an Electronics and Communications Engineer. Engr. Mojal is an Operations and Maintenance Engineer and has been with Smart for ten years and is in charge of the operations and maintenance of the various elements of Smart Base Stations (BTS), 3G, 2G, Canopy, Wimax, and other wireless technologies. He also deals with transmission equipment in wired, wireless, and fiber optics media. His area of responsibility is the South Cebu area which includes Cebu City.
