HNU'S 4TH ENGINEERING FAIR INTRODUCES NEW TREND IN TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION

After a three-day successful event at the Atrium of BQ Mall, the Holy Name University College of Engineering has proudly presented to the public the fruits of hard labor and skillful craftsmanship of its engineering students from the three different departments, namely from the Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Electronics and Communications Engineering.

The College of Engineering students under the supervision of their respective professors, have once again introduced a new innovation of science and technology to the public.

The Civil Engineering fourth year students displayed their miniature-scaled carpentry works introducing creativity and design of a two-storey building. The work of Ms. Joy Charmaine De Vera, Mr. Frederick Lupio, and Jeremias Suyman entitled "The Dream House" won First Place among the Carpentry & Building Methods category. The Second Place went to "Home Sweet Home," and the Third Place to "The Green House Effect."

On the other hand, the CE graduating class ran a design analysis on the "The Proposed Development of Moalong as an Eco-Tourism Destination in Loon, Bohol." The Honorable Mayor, Lloyd Peter M. Lopez from Loon, Bohol and the members of his Sangguniang Bayan made a visit to the exhibit venue to witness the miniature landscaped model of the project study for Loon.

Meanwhile, the Department of Computer Engineering presented some innovative researches on automation and robotics and interfaced-technique projects. Robots may used to be the favorite toys of the young boys; but during the present time, these new technology on robots, more popularly known as "mobots" are used in first world countries. Tiny as they may seem, they are capable of performing pre-programmed multi-task in response to stimuli just like those shown in sci-fi movies.

The USB-Interfaced based projects of the fourth year computer engineering students introduced a new state-of-the-art technology that are very in-demand in the industry today such as the "Attendance Monitoring System" and the "Automated Inventory Control." Both technology can be applied to the system of the academe and the market industry, respectively.

Finally, it was the pride of the Electronics and Communications Engineering graduating students to have showcased their project designs on early-warning devices that made use of current communication technologies such as SMS and the Internet. Other ECE students also made use of the computer in their projects. Among these electronics-based prototypes are the "i CAM," "Flood Control and Monitoring System," "Ultrasonic Water Level Detector," "Parking Area Security System," "SIM Card as ID and Key," "SMS Infoboard," and "Stock and Inventory Control."

The project design "SIM Card as ID and Key" won the First Place while "i CAM" and "Parking Area Security System" made a tie for the Second Place, and lastly, the "SMS Infoboard" got the Third Place. Winners of the design projects were also given cash prizes.

Among the highlights of the 4th HNU Engineering Fair, aside from the three-day project exhibit display, was the formal launching and ribbon cutting ceremony on the first day, March 6 at 10 o'clock in the morning. This was administered by Bohol Quality Corporation's mall manager, Mr. Sulphio Bernasor, SMART Wireless Center OIC, Ms. Marilyn Indac, and HNU's own Father President, Fr. Ernesto Lagura, SVD. The HNU Engineering Chorale, under the batonship of Engr. Miguel Sarigumba, Jr. gave a new aura of the National Athem and Bohol Hymn during the opening ceremony.

The said event was co-presented by Bohol Quality Corporation and SMART Communications, Inc. The Awarding and Closing Ceremonies was held last Saturday, March 8 at 1:30 in the afternoon.

Two separate quiz bowls were sponsored by the Engineering Local Government Unit (LGU) and the Institute of Electronics and Communications Engineering of the Philippines (IECEP) Local Chapter on the afternoon of March 6 and 7, respectively. Winners of the Inter-departmental Quizbowl of the Engineering LGU were from the ECE Department composed of Geronimo Arbutante, Wilmer Milloria, and Margarette Nitollama with their coach, Engr. Ian Paul Cainglet. The Second and Third Places went to the CE Department composed of Jose Paolo Apalisok, Joy Charmaine De Vera and Lindy Coraza as Team 1, and Rolando Atendido Jr., Reinerio Fostanes, Jr. and Angelo Molina as Team 2, respectively with their coach, Engr. Ian Elle Samonte. The quizbowl was administered by Engr. Luz T. Nuera as quizmaster.

On the other hand, the IECEP Quizbowl were participated in by engineering students from the BIT International School and University of Bohol. The winners of the said quizbowl were Mr. Gersom Egamao from University of Bohol who garnered the First Place while the Second Place went to Mr. Teaodulo Geangan also from University of Bohol and the Third Place to the contestant from BIT. The winners received USB flashdrives and trophies. The quizbowl's quizmaster was Engr. Jerome Auza, the technical consultant of Auza.net.

The IECEP Quizbowl was presented by the IECEP Bohol Chapter, HNU ECE Society, and Auza. net in cooperation with the following sponsors: Riverwatch Floating Restaurant, Egay's Petshop, Supercarp Boat Rental, PERC DC-Review Center and Your Health and Wellness Center. The Trophies were donated by Jhun Advertising.

The 4th HNU Engineering Fair would not have been a huge success without the support from its generous sponsors, namely, 1st Flower Avenue, AAC Tech, ALTAIR Solutions, C3AMARLE Financing, C3A MARLE Hardware, DN Steel, EXCEL First Review Center, MARLE Advertising Designs, and Thinking Tools.
