HNU PUBLICATIONS DIRECTOR LECTURES IN TWO INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES AND GIVES SEMINAR ON WORK ETHIC AT SWU

On April 28, 2010, Holy Name University’s Director of Publications, Dr. Eddie R. Babor, presented a paper titled: “Nietzsche’s Concept of Religious” during the International Conference on Higher Education Research Utilization, Experience, and Discovery held in the University of Northern Philippines, Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines.

There were almost 600 delegates who participated in the conference. They came primarily from prominent academic institutions in Manila, the northern part of the Philippines, Canada, United Sates of America, Singapore, Korea, India, and Japan.

The conference ended on May 01, 2010. On this day, the papers that were presented were submitted to a contest from the perspective on publishability. The Panel of Judges were composed of scholars from Japan, Canada, Singapore, and the U.S.A. The paper of Dr. Babor was awarded Third Place under the category “Best Publishable Paper in Arts, Socio Culture, Philosophy, Management and Religion.” Below is a Japanese scholar from Kochi University in Japan named , Dr. Ken Kawasaki, a member of the Panel of Judges who was tasked to give the certificate to Dr. Babor as 3rd placer.

Several weeks later, that is, on May 37, 2010, Dr. Babor presented another paper in another international conference, i.e., the International Conference on Critical Theory sponsored by the Philosophical Association of the Visayas and Mindanao (PHAVISMINDA). The paper that he delivered is titled: “The Problematics of Homosexuality: Can Foucault Liberate the Gays?: An Expose, an Evaluation, and a Critical Analysis of the Phenomenon on Homosexuality.”

The aforecited international conference was hosted by Silliman University and St. Paul University at the South Sea Resort and Hotel, Bantayan, Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, Philippines.

Other paper presenters came from Vermont, U.S.A., Chicago, U.S.A., Australia, and Sweden, including the scholars from the leading universities in the Philippines, like De La Salle University, Ateneo de Manila University, Ateneo de Davao University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, University of Santo Tomas, University of the Philippines, Silliman University, Holy Name University, University of San Carlos, Cebu Normal University, University of San Jose Recolletos, among others.

Considering the sensitivity of the topic of the paper delivered by Dr. Babor, many of the participants raised several questions especially on matters of morality, psychology, sociology, law, and theology in relation to homosexuality.

The aforesaid conference ended on May 29, 2010. During this part, the organizers awarded PHAVISMINDA members who have written books with a certificate of appreciation titled “Distinguished Author Award 2010.” Five of the participants got this award. One of them is Dr. Eddie Babor with his 4th book which deals on Bioethics as one of his principal contributions to the world of research and publication.

Before Dr. Babor, however, lectured on the International Conference on Critical Theory, he was first invited by the President and the VP for Academic Affairs and Administration of Southwestern University in Cebu City, Dr. Elsa A. Suralta, and Capt. Jose T. Tiglao, PCGA, respectively, to give a two-day seminar-workshop on work ethic to SWU’s non-academic personnel.

Dr. Babor entitled his presentation “Ethics, Professionalism and the Moral Dimension of Work: Essential Nuances of the Human Person as the Worker.” Almost 300 non-academic personnel of SWU participated in the seminar including Dr. Suralta, Capt. Tiglao and SWU’s Vice President for Finance, Dr. Albim Y. Cabatingan.

The aforesaid seminar-workshop was held in the majestic Mountain View Park in Cebu City on May 24-25, 2010. The venue was an ideal site as the participants wrestled to answer questions for group reflection, like: Why do I work? What has work to do with me and my God, family, fellow humans, and society in general? As a worker, what have I contributed for the welfare of SWU? What are the things that make me happy and the things that make me sad in SWU? These were only some of the questions that Dr. Babor dished out to the participants during the two days seminar-workshop.
