HNU HOSTS NATIONAL CIVIL ENGINEERING EDUCATION CONGRESS

Holy Name University recently hosted the 8th National Civil Engineering Education Congress last May 20-22, 2010 with the theme "Civil Engineering Education: Engaging the Challenges of the Environment in a Global Economy" at the Skills Laboratory of the College of Nursing in Freinademitz Building, Janssen Heights campus. This was in coordination with the Association of Civil Engineering Educators of the Philippines, Inc. (ACEEP).

The congress aimed to review and update expertise and knowledge addressed in the civil engineering education so that a new breed of civil engineers are nurtured in tertiary education institutions who are deemed capable to respond timely and effectively to the changes and challenges in the profession.

The three-day national event was attended by 46 delegates from different institutions from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Among the highlights of the event were the plenary sessions where 12 speakers presented their research papers. Other than paper presentations, the participants had their evening socials on the second day and a Bohol country-side tour on the third day.

The event started with a registration and short program on the first day, May 20th. Fr. Andres Guban, SVD welcomed the visitors while Engr. Ben Redulla spoke in behalf of Congressman Edgar Chatto to also welcome the guests to the province of Bohol. Meanwhile, Dr. Ernesto de Castro, 1st Vice President of the National Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE), also welcomed the participants to the said congress. On the other hand, Dr. Danilo Terante from the Association of Civil Engineering Educators of the Philippines, Inc., gave the statement of purpose for the said congress.

Among the papers presented were the following: "Online Structural Engineering Training: Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice" by Dr. Ernesto de Castro coming from ESCA Inc. in Quezon City; "SRP Transportation Planning" by Engr. Lynn Gloria Madrona from University of San Jose - Recoletos in Cebu City; "Materials and Soil Testing Education and Practice" by Engr. Walden Rio from Central Philippine University in Iloilo City, also founder of the CE Education Congress.

Further, Engr. Gerardo Apor from Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro City presented the paper entitled "Landslide Hazard and Risk Mapping of the Rural Barangays of Cagayan de Oro City," Engr. Raymundo Romero from Partido State University in Goa, Camarines Sur on "Managing A Sustainable Community Water Resources in San Jose, Camarines Sur: Engineering and Economic Considerations," Maribel Tolentino from Angeles University Foundation in Pampanga also presented "Sustainable Development Advocacy: The Solid Waste Management Project."

Furthermore, Engr. Eliseo Ana, Jr. from University of the Philipines Los Baños in Laguna presented the paper "Infrastructure Asset Management in Sewer Networks-Perspective and Challenges," Engr. Cresencio Natividad, Jr. from University of St. Louis, Tuguegarao City on "Disaster and Global Warming and its Relation to Research and Outreach Program of the University," Dr. Ruel Reyes also from Angeles University Foundation presented two papers, "Modified Technology Acceptance Model for Determining Students Appreciation of Educational Software" and "Internet Assisted Learning: The Angeles University Foundation College of Engineering Experience."

Furtherstill, two papers by Engr. Rodel Medestomas from St. Mary's University in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya and Engr. Eduardo Torrico, Jr. from University of Southeastern Philippines, Davao City presented "Tilt-Up Concrete Technology for Mass Housing" and "Urban Traffic Performance and Air Quality Condition in Davao City" respectively.

After four years of absence in holding the national congress, when the last event held was in 2006 hosted by Angeles University Foundation, an election of officers was conducted to activate a new ACEEP. The new set of ACEEP Board of Directors was composed of officers from Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and the National Capital Region.

The new Board of Directors are as follows: Dr. Danilo Terante, President; Engr. James Uy, Vice President; Engr. Lynn Gloria Madrona, Secretary; Engr. Paul Javier, Treasurer; Engr. Eduardo Torrico, Jr., Engr. Rodel Medestomas, Dr. Eliseo Ana, Jr., Engr. Cresencio Natividad, Jr., Engr. Dave Osabel, Engr. Gerardo Apor, Engr. Soterlita Pepino, Engr. Alexis Fillone, Engr. Manuel Muhi, Engr. Rowena Alviola and lastly, Engr. Rhonnie Estores.

The congress' plenary session was not just plainly intellectual but it was made by the organizer quite of a show when each of the participants had a grasp of their own perks such as books, bags, T-shirts and Smartbro Wifi plug-it through an electronic raffle draw. These surprises were courtesy of Pearsons, Wiley, McGraw Hill, Cengage Learning and Smart Communications, Inc.

After the two-day plenary session, the participants were treated by the host to an evening of world class entertainment at the Bohol Tropics Resort on the evening of the second day, May 21st. The guests were truly impressed with the performance of the Loboc Youth Ambassadors who marvelously showed off the pride of the Boholanos.

The new set of board of directors was also introduced to the members of ACEEP, who pledged and committed their service to the organization. The national congress was participated in by 32 different college institutions nationwide. Among the participating schools were Jose Maria College, University of Southeastern Philippines, University of Immaculate Concepcion, University of Mindanao and FEU - East Asia College in Davao City, Isabela State College and Ramon Magsaysay Technological University in Isabela, University of Bohol and Bohol Island State University in Bohol, University of St. Louis and Cagayan State University in Tuguegarao City, Partido State University in Camarines Sur, St. Mary's University in Nueva Vizcaya, Naval State University, St. Joseph College in Maasin, Leyte, University of the Philippines Los Baños, Angeles University Foundation, Surigao State College of Technology, University of San Jose-Recoletos, University of Cebu and University of the Visayas in Cebu City, Palawan State University, Kalinga Apayao State University, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology in Cabanatuan City, Technological Institute of the Philippines in Manila, St. Mary's College in Tagum City, Batangas State University, Naga College Foundation, Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro City, Ramon Magsaysay Memorial College in General Santos City, Western Institute Technology and Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College in Iloilo.

Not much could have been achieved without the generous sponsors' support to this highly respectable association's endeavor. The said congress was organized by Holy Name University College of Engineering through the leadership of Dean James P. Uy assisted by its executive committee composed of Engr. Rey Agunod and Engr. Jan Ray Rulida as graphic artists, Ms. Jennifer Halasan, as head of the secretariat, Engr. Luz Nuera, who was the lady of ceremonies during the two-day plenary sessions and evening socials; Engr. Cristoper Dohig and Engr. Romel Remolador for the physical arrangement, Engr. Justin Villocido, the electronic raffle wizard and at the same time the tour guide; and the able assistance of Engrs. Marilou Uy, Rosanne Daquio and Virginia Madanguit.
