COCS and PSITE-REGION 7 HOLD 2ND BOHOL IT STUDENT CONGRESS

The College of Computer Science, in cooperation with the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators – Region 7, once again hosted the Bohol IT Student Congress last February 13, 2010 at the Lesage AV Hall. The congress is anchored on the theme: “IT Certifications: Why You Need IT!”
The participants were welcomed by Fr. Francisco Estepa, the university President, while the statement of purpose was given by Ms. Amie Rosarie Caballo, Dean of the College of Computer Science of Holy Name University, in behalf of Mr. Dave Marcial, the PSITE-7 President.

The students were given an orientation on the certification exams offered by Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the Philippine National IT Standards Foundation (PhilNITS), and the Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Techonology (CEDF-IT). Dr. Francisca Opog, the OIC Provincial Director of TESDA-Bohol discussed the Competency Assessment and Certification System offered by the said organization. In Bohol they are offering the NC II Computer Hardware Servicing, NC IV Computer Programming and NC II Medical Transcriptionist certification exams. On the other hand, Ms. Larmie Feliscuzo, the Chair of the IT Department of the Cebu Institute of Technology, being a PhilNITS-certified person, encouraged the students to take the Fundamental Engineer’s examination offered by PhilNITS because of the opportunities that it offers.

The said exam is given twice year and Holy Name University is the only testing center in Bohol. Mr. Wilfredo T. Sa-a, the Executive Director of CEDF-IT, discussed the scope of the Philippine IT General Certification exam, which their organization has been offering.
Ms. Caballo also took the opportunity to invite the students to the newest exam offered by PhilNITS, which is the IT Passport exam. The pilot test will be conducted this coming March 28, 2010 at Holy Name University.
The congress was participated in by computer science (CS), information technology (IT), computer engineering (CpE) students from Holy Name University, University of Bohol, Buenavista Community College, Bohol Institute of Technology, Informatics Computer Institute, STI-Tagbilaran, and Bohol Island State University (Tagbilaran, Bilar and Candijay campuses).
