HNU COE STUDENTS tecHNUvates!

The College of Engineering of Holy Name University marks another productive school year with the culmination of the 6th HNU Engineering Fair and Project Exhibit set on March 4-5, 2010 at the Atrium of BQ Mall, Tagbilaran City with the theme "tecHNUvate (tek-nyu-veyt) v. Innovating Technology the HNU Way."

Among the highlights of this event will be the first public presentation of the grand champion of the recent 6th SWEEP Innovation and Excellence Awards in Makati last February 5-6, 2010, the "Water Supply Management through Wireless Technology" project.

On the other hand, the engineering students will showcase their projects to the public for scrutiny and appreciation. The event will once again feature the different student projects from the three respective departments of the HNU College of Engineering: Civil Engineering (CE), Computer Engineering (CpE), and Electronics and Communications (ECE) Engineering.

The main objective of this annual event is to showcase the technical skills and know-how that the students have gain in their five-year stint in college. It also aim to share its interest for public awareness and appreciation for science, engineering, and technology. Students will also compete for the "Best Student Research" of the year, as well as the "Best Project" for the different categories in Interfacing Techniques and Design Project, both from the CpE and ECE as well as the Standard Abattoir Designs from CE which is presently a part of the outreach linkage between Holy Name University (HNU) and the Office of the Provincial Veterinary (OPV). The students from the third year to the fifth year levels will participate in the said project exhibit.

The Civil Engineering department will feature the following projects of their respective classes: Theory and Structures from the third year level, Carpentry from the fourth year level, and Project Study from the fifth year level. Miniature models of different standard abattoir designs will be on display for the Theory and Structures subject while miniature house models will also be on display for the Carpentry subject. On the other hand, the fifth year Civil Engineering students will be presenting a 3D miniature model of a proposed development plan of an eco-tourism project for Anda, Bohol.

Meanwhile, the Computer Engineering department will feature projects from the Computer Interfacing Techniques class and Design Project class from the fourth year and fifth year level, respectively. Four projects will participate in the Computer Interfacing Techniques while there are two entries for the Design Project. One of these projects focuses on a system which facilitates job-seeking while the other sought to automate the student elections of the university.

Finally, the projects from the Electronics and Communications Engineering department will exhibit outputs also from the Computer Interfacing Techniques and Design Project classes from the fourth year and fifth year level respectively. There are four groups for the Computer Interfacing Techniques and eight groups for the Design Project.

The Design Projects for this year center around the theme of empowering communities through wired and wireless technologies and how technology is innovated the HNU way. This is in line with SMART Communication's theme in its 6th SWEEP Innovations and Excellence Awards. Holy Name University maintains a partnership with SMART Communications through its Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP) and Application Developer Intro School (ADIS).

The HNU-CoE Fair and Project Exhibit is a two-day activity which will commence March 4, 2010 at 9 o'clock in the morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to be followed with a short opening program. A signing of the Memorandum-of-Agreement and turn-over ceremony between HNU and the OPV are among the highlights during the said opening. In the afternoon of the same day, the public defense of the Design Projects from the fifth year level will also take place. A panel of judges will determine which among the projects will be adjudged as Best Student Research of the year. Simultaneous judging with the rest of the different projects will also take place. Projects will be judged according to their respective categories.

The two-day event will culminate with a Closing and Awarding ceremonies in the afternoon of March 5, 2010.

This event is made possible by the following: BQ Mall, Smart Communications, Inc. and C3A Marle Hardware and Industrial Corporation as presenters while INTEL Technology, First Excel Review Center are among the major sponsors and C4A Construction Builders and Mother of Perpetual Medical Equipment and Supplies are the minor sponsors. The event organizers would also like to thank Bingo Bohol and Julie's Bakeshop for their support.
